22 February 2010

In First Aid treatment for A Bee Sting, why do you elevate the limb?
If bitten by a spider like the Funnel Web you keep the limb low. Why 2 different treatments for a poisonous bite? Is the venom from the Funnel Web more potent than the Bee Sting?
For a funnel bite you keep the limb low because it is a venom and it is harder for it to climb that way. You raise the limb for things like Stings so that the swelling is reduced.

Diphenhydramine $56 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is a chemical mainly used as an antihistamine, antiemetic, sedative, and hypnotic. It is produced and marketed under the trade name Benadryl by McNeil-PPC (a division of Johnson & Johnson) in the U.S. and Canada, and Dimedrol in other countries. It is also found in the name-brand products Nytol, Unisom, and Advil PM though some Unisom products contain doxylamine instead. It is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) or prescribed HCI injectable. It may also be used for the treatment of extrapyramidal side effects of typical antipsychotics, such as the tremors that haloperidol can cause. Additionally, injectable diphenhydramine can be used for life threatening reactions (anaphylaxis) to allergens such as bee stings, peanuts, or latex rather than risking the side effects of epinephrine. It is a member of the ethanolamine class of antihistaminergic agents. Diphenhydramine was one of the first known antihistamines, invented in 1943 by Dr. George Rieveschl, a former professor at the University of Cincinnati. In 1946, it became the first prescription antihistamine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). |

Polyclonal Antibodies: Antivenom $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Antivenom (or antivenin or antivenene) is a biological product used in the treatment of venomous bites or stings. Antivenom is created by injecting a small amount of the targeted venom into an animal such as a horse, sheep, goat, or rabbit; the subject animal will undergo an immune response to the venom, producing antibodies against the venom’s active molecule which can then be harvested from the animal’s blood and used to treat envenomation. Internationally, antivenoms must conform to the standards of Pharmacopoeia and the World Health Organization (WHO). The name antivenin comes from the French word venin, meaning venom, and historically antivenin was predominant around the world. In 1981, the World Health Organization decided that the preferred terminology in the English language would be “venom” and “antivenom” rather than “venin/antivenin” or “venen/antivenene”. The principle of antivenom is based on that of vaccines, developed by Louis Pasteur; however, instead of inducing immunity in the patient directly, it is induced in a host animal and the hyperimmunized serum is transfused into the patient. Antivenoms can be classified into monovalent (when they are effective against a given species’ venom) or polyvalent (when they are effective against a range of species, or several different species at the same time). The first antivenom for snakes (called an anti-ophidic serum) was developed by Albert Calmette, a French scientist of the Pasteur Institute working at its Indochine branch in 1895, against the Indian Cobra (Naja naja). Vital Brazil, a Brazilian scientist, developed in 1901 the first monovalent and polyvalent antivenoms for Central and South American Crotalus, Bothrops and Elaps genera, as well as for certain species of venomous spi… More: |

Rabies and Envenomings: A Neglected Public Health Issue: Report of a Consultative Meeting $11.01 This publication reports on a Consultative Meeting convened to discuss strategies for improving the quality and quantity of therapeutic antisera essential drugs for the effective treatment of suspected rabid dog bites and envenoming by snakebites and scorpion stings. Inadequacies in the efficacy safety and production of these antisera have created a major global public health crisis especially in Africa and Asia. Each year millions of people are bitten by dogs or snakes or stung by scorpions and the failure to provide antisera costs at least 150,000 lives and at least as many cases of permanent physical handicap. The solution to this crisis demands an international effort to promote transfer of technology to affected countries to improve standards through the WHO’s prequalification scheme and to facilitate distribution of antisera and training of medical personnel in their optimal use. |
