what can i do to make my horse happier?
my horse is a 10 year old TB. He used to be a steeplechaser untill he was 5 and then he was bought by a family who had him trained in hunter/jumper/dressage. His old barn kept him cooped up in a stall and he was very high strung. At my barn he is turned out all day and only brought in for storms, feedings etc.
The flies are really bad though, and they bother him badly. He just stomps and bites and twitches his shoulders. CONSTANTLY even when i’ve bathed him and doused him, practicly, in fly spray. I even tried a fly treatment. I think he’s wearing himself out between the flies and the high heat in our area (it’s in the 90′s almost every day)
What can I do? He needs to be ridden to stay in shape but i almost feel like i’m torturing him riding him when he’s acting worn out like he does. Is there anything I could do for him to make him have a bit more pleasant summer (and me too : /) ? I dont like feeling like he’s struggling through the day, any suggestions would be great.
I will admit that fly spray helps, somewhat, but it certainly isn’t a cure for nasty flies.
I would suggest buying a good quality, heavy duty fly sheet and a long face mask with ears. I have not had good luck with the mesh cotton sheets, horses seem to destroy them so quickly, but I have several thick fly sheets made by a local seamstress that are totally indestructable. And I do mean indestructable. They look like new after two summers of use, they are made of the thick mesh that is a bit like the plastic burlap stuff. Buy one in white or a light color so it reflects the sunlight. A long face mask with ears will keep the flies off his eyes, ears and nose and make his life much better, too.
If you feel that its just too hot for him to wear the fly sheets, then you might be better off keeping him inside during the day, and then turning him out all evening and night. Flies are normally at their peak during the heat of the day and settle at night. Horses do not sleep continuously at night, so they can do very well in night time turnout.
As for riding, I would make certain I was out riding first thing in the morning, or late in the evening when the worst of the heat is over. You might also try hosing him down before you ride, the moisture will cool him as you move along.
Otherwise there isn’t much you can do except common sense. Make sure he has a constant supply of fresh water. Make sure he has access to some shade during the hottest part of the day – even standing under a tree can help. Make sure he has loose salt to make up for his salt lose.
